New York State Senator Jeffrey Klein and City Council Majority Leader Joel Rivera joined St. Barnabas trustees and administrators to cut the ribbon opening the hospital’s new state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center, located in a totally renovated space on the main floor of the hospital.  The beautifully decorated suite includes 12 individual patient bays, each with its own flat screen TV, and a spacious lobby where family members can wait in comfort.

Many surgeries that just a decade ago required a hospital stay can now be done on an outpatient basis. Same-day surgery reduces infection rates, promotes faster healing and allows patient to recuperate surrounded by the comforts of home, according to Lynn Kemp, the hospital’s administrator of surgical services.

“This Center should serve as a model,” remarked Senator Klein in praise of the new unit.

Councilmember Rivera noted the spa-like ambience. “We know the anxiety level of people coming to the hospital,” he said. “In this spa-like environment you are providing better health care,” affirmed the councilmember.

With its own entrance, convenient drop-off and pick-up area and free parking for patients on the day of surgery, the new suite will improve the community’s ease of access to ambulatory surgery procedures.
