Ethics Committee

During the course of a patient’s illness, the health care team and the patient’s family and/or friends may be confronted with some difficult health care decisions. The Ethics Committee of St. Barnabas Hospital, a team of health care professionals, explores various approaches to decision-making and offers recommendations for resolving ethical issues of patient care.

The primary purpose of this committee is to give counsel and advice to the physicians responsible for the medical case under consideration. Members of the Ethics Committee also make themselves available to meet with patients, family members and/or designated representatives as well as with the patient’s health care team members in an effort to clarify and resolve ethical problems that may arise.

Consultations with the Ethics Committee can be arranged by contacting the
Patient Relations Department at (718) 960-6121 or (718) 960-6353.
