Families Gather for Health Fair
A gorgeous summer Saturday provided the perfect backdrop for St. Barnabas Hospital’s free health fair on August 21. The day’s activities celebrated the hospital’s tenth year as a regional trauma center and also promoted back-to-school and injury prevention, with over 100 guests obtaining safety identification cards and over 300 children receiving free bike helmets.
Participants lined up for free blood pressure, dental and vision screenings and had plenty opportunities for fun. The Dora the Explorer castle bounce, spin art, face painting, and special visit from a local FDNY fire truck entertained parents and children alike for hours. About 15 children took part in a “Yoga for Kids” demonstration, and other attendees gathered for a demonstration on tai-chi.
Music with a Message, a band comprised of students from the local organization Renaissance EMS, provided music at the event. At the end of the fair, two lucky children won the coveted raffle prize: a new bicycle.
In recognition of their help to make the fair a success, SBH presented Appreciation Awards to HealthFirst, Renaissance EMS – Music with a Message and the NYS Masonic Lodge Bronx Chapter Safety Identification Program. In addition, SBH presented participation certificates to Cornell University Cooperative Extension, Mt. Carmel Pharmacy and the New York City chapter of Safe Kids.
