Surgical Residency
Program

Overview

Message from the Director of Surgery, Stephen DiRusso, M.D. PhD.

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the St. Barnabas Surgical Residency Program.

Our website was designed to demonstrate the many and varied activities and strengths of our department as they relate to the education of the surgical resident.

The program has many strengths, including being one of a few Osteopathic Surgical Residencies associated with a Level I Trauma Center, and one of the busiest in New York City. St. Barnabas Hospital is also a vibrant and integral part of the Bronx community.

The Surgery Department is committed to developing the best possible surgical education program and to train exemplary and well-rounded surgeons.

Message From the Residency Director, Vic Vernenkar, D.O.

Surgical Residency Program

Description of Program

The program is accredited by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons for 4 years of training, leading to eligibility to sit for the ACOS Boards in General Surgery. There is approval for twelve (12) residents from the PGY 2 through PGY5 positions. We have approval for three (3) surgical PGY1 interns as well.

Application Process

We participate in the ERAS application service. Prospective surgical residents apply through the ERAS application service when applying for internships, as we have a Surgical Track internship that will apply towards the PGY 1 year in Surgery. Interviews are held regularly from October through December. Acceptance to the Program in most cases implies completing all 4 years, and only under extraordinary circumstances will early departure from the program take place. We do accept residents from other institutions as long as they have an approved osteopathic internship, when openings are present. Additionally, medical students from NYCOM, PCOM, as well as other institutions rotate through the department on a regular basis, as do interns.

Rotations

Outside rotations include Westchester Medical Center (Pediatric Surgery, Critical Care), Memorial Sloan-Kettering (Head and Neck Surgery), and Montefiore/Einstein Medical Center(Cardio-Thoracic), Deborah Heart and Lung Center (Vascular), and Jersey City Medical Center (General Surgery).

Residents rotate through Trauma, General Surgery and Subspecialty services while in house throughout their years here.
