Overview
The Dental Anesthesiology Training Program is one of four residencies at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NY. The other programs are the General Practice Residency Program, the Pediatric Dental Residency Program and the Orthodontic Residency Program, all located in the main hospital and/or the satellite clinics.
The Dental Anesthesiology Training Program began accepting residents in July 2009. It has initial accreditation from CODA and is expecting full accreditation in June of 2011. The program accepts two residents for a 24-month residency. Following criteria set down by CODA, the residents will be exposed to various methodologies in anesthesiology. During the first year of training the residents will be rotated into Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Medicine rotations for a minimum of four weeks per session. They will also be assigned to the General Operating Room for general anesthesiology training, observing and training in various types, modalities and disciplines of anesthesiology. Residents are also required to begin a research project in an anesthesiology discipline approved by the research coordinator, to be completed during their two years in training.
During year two, residents will rotate through the dental clinic to deliver and manage cases in oral surgery, periodontal surgery and pediatric dentistry, in addition to performing their duties in the general operating room. They will also be on-call during their two-year residency in the department of anesthesia as well as twice a month in the Department of Dentistry as second call.
The anesthesia residents are expected to interact with all the different residents in all the disciplines to aide and assist in the administration of anesthesia and management of difficult patients and/or cases.
