Infectious Diseases and HIV Care

The Division of Infectious Diseases has been a well-established department at St. Barnabas Hospital since 1986. Our Infectious Disease physicians care for patients with a wide range of infections including influenza, recurrent MRSA infections, HIV, tuberculosis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases and hospital-acquired infections, to name a few. In addition, we evaluate patients prior to travel for vaccine requirements including yellow fever and malaria prophylaxis.

The Division includes both the Infectious Disease inpatient and outpatient consultation service and the Pathways Center for Comprehensive Care, our New York State Designated HIV Center. The Division has 6 full time and 1 part-time Infectious Disease physicians who see patients admitted to the hospital, the St. Barnabas Nursing Home, the St. Barnabas Hospital Ambulatory Care HIV Center and Infectious Disease clinic, and in 2 private practices in the Bronx.

The Pathways Center for Comprehensive Care is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Ralph Belloise is our Director of HIV Services. Every patient in our center is assigned a case manager and primary HIV care physician. The case managers address any issues related to insurance, housing, social support and assisting adherence to appointments and medications. The Center in addition offers educational and support groups, a social workers, a nutritionist, a Hepatitis C and liver specialist, a psychiatrist and referral for substance abuse, and HIV and pregnancy care. All the specialty care provided at St. Barnabas is available to our patients. Continuity of care is important to us. Physicians continue to care for their patients if they are admitted to the hospital or nursing home.

Free, confidential HIV oral rapid testing with results in 20 minutes is available in our clinics, Emergency Department, and inpatient units.
