Critical Care (ICU)

St. Barnabas Hospital’s intensive care unit serves a wide range of critically ill and injured patients with over 3,000 admissions per year. The intensive care unit is staffed with dedicated and highly trained Intensive Care physicians who are present 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the hospital and ready to treat patients in need of immediate attention.

The intensivists respond to the needs of the critically ill patients in the Emergency Department, general Medical and Surgical wards and in the Intensive Care Unit. St. Barnabas Hospital is a designated Level I Trauma Center, Stroke Center and Therapeutic Hypothermia Center. The Intensive Care physicians work closely with the other specialized services including Trauma, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology, Pulmonary and Nephrology.

Our nurse manager and critical care nurses are experienced, well-trained and provide professional and compassionate care to our patients. Our multi-disciplinary approach would not be complete without the involvement from our extensive ancillary services that include respiratory therapists, dieticians, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, certified nurse assistants and case managers.

In order to help patients and their families understand the complex medical care that takes place in the ICU, we have informational brochures in the waiting area and the Intensive Care physician is available to answer questions. Additional support is available through our social workers, patient representatives and pastoral care.

The St. Barnabas ICU team is devoted to the comprehensive care and well-being of the critically ill and injured patient.
