Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesia at St. Barnabas Hospital provides outstanding clinical care for patients with different medical needs. The anesthesia care team, which consists of 20 faculty members, is involved in the patient care of 5,000 operating room cases, 1,500 obstetrical cases, and 2,000 endoscopy cases annually. Our pain management team provides interventional treatment for acute and chronic pain. Our doctors ensure that all patients will receive the same level of high quality treatment from a caring, vigilant, attentive team of medical professionals.
Trauma Surgery
We are a Level I Trauma Center. Trauma patients, as well as those requiring emergency surgery, are cared for in the operating rooms by a team of anesthesiologists and trauma surgeons.
Obstetric Anesthesia
Currently, through the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team of anesthesia providers, obstetricians, perinatologists, midwives, neonatologists and nurses, this service supports an estimated 1,500 births each year.
Anesthesia is dedicated to providing constant in-house and on-site coverage of the obstetric floors. More than 70% of our patients receive epidural or combined spinal-epidural analgesia for labor. The majority of patients who have cesarean deliveries may also be administered regional anesthetics. In addition to cesarean deliveries, the OB anesthesia team provides on-site anesthesia services for other obstetric-related operative procedures including postpartum tubal ligations and cervical cerclage placements.
Endoscopy
Most endoscopy cases are usually completed in less than one hour and frequently last less than 15 minutes. The vast majority of endoscopy patients receive local anesthesia with IV sedation.
Pain Management
Pain Management at St. Barnabas Hospital strives to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for individuals with acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain. Coordinated consultative services are available for those who are hospitalized as well those referred for evaluation in the ambulatory setting. We focus on early evaluation and intervention in efforts to minimize the development of chronic, disabling pain. Our team aims to assemble an individualized and comprehensive plan for optimal pain treatment that will allow each person to return to an optimal level of function in his or her work and personal life.
